Ezechi Raises Alarm Over Erosion Threat to Old Sapele/Agbor Road, Urges Immediate Government Action

ABUJA/Nigeria: Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, has called for urgent government intervention to address the escalating erosion crisis along the Old Sapele/Agbor Road, particularly in the Obinomba, Obiaruku, and Umukwata Kingdom sections of Ukwuani Local Government Area, Delta State.

Presenting a motion before the House of Representatives, Hon. Ezechi emphasised the critical role the Old Sapele/Agbor Road plays in the region’s transportation network, connecting numerous towns and supporting economic activity.

He expressed grave concern over the road’s deteriorating condition, exacerbated by years of unchecked erosion. Several sections of the road have already sustained severe damage, posing a significant danger to motorists and nearby properties, as well as jeopardising key infrastructure.

Ezechi warned that without swift action, the erosion menace could lead to the road’s total collapse, paralysing local economies and intensifying the hardships endured by residents. “The continued degradation of this crucial road threatens not only the safety of road users but also the economic growth and daily life of the surrounding communities,” he cautioned.

Following Ezechi’s impassioned appeal, Hon. Aliyu Bappa Misau, representing Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency in Bauchi State, seconded the motion, lending his support to the urgent need for intervention.

In response, the House resolved that the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to conduct an immediate technical assessment of the erosion damage along the affected sections of the Old Sapele/Agbor Road, and also for the Committees on Works and FERMA to liaise with the Ministry and ensure that the necessary measures for erosion control and road rehabilitation are included in the 2025 budget.

Hon. Ezechi underscored the importance of a timely government response, stating that “prompt intervention is essential to safeguard lives, protect critical infrastructure, and ensure the continued economic viability of the region.”

His call for action highlights the pressing need for federal attention to address the erosion threat and prevent further damage to this vital transportation
