Expediency Of Emulating Ambode And Sanwo-Olu As The Camaraderie Between Them Portends Progress (OPINION)
By Isaac Asabor
In the often contentious world of Nigerian politics, camaraderie is a rare gem. The political landscape is marked by power struggles, betrayals, and a seeming reluctance to forge alliances for the common good. It is in this context that the relationship between former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and his successor, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stands out as a beacon of hope for what could be, a politics defined by respect, collaboration, and shared vision.
In fact, Ambode’s tenure as governor of Lagos State from 2015 to 2019 was marked by significant infrastructure projects and a push towards modernizing Africa’s largest city. However, his bid for a second term was thwarted by the political machinery that propelled Sanwo-Olu to power. In many political environments, such a scenario would have led to bitterness and a protracted rivalry. Yet, Ambode chose a different path, demonstrating a level of maturity and grace that is seldom seen in Nigerian politics.
Instead of becoming an adversary, Ambode accepted the outcome of the party’s primaries and, crucially, supported Sanwo-Olu’s campaign. This decision laid the foundation for the cordial relationship that the two now share, a relationship that is built on mutual respect and a common interest in the development of Lagos State. Sanwo-Olu, onhis part, has shown appreciation for Ambode’s efforts during his time in office, often acknowledging the foundation laid by his predecessor. This mutual respect has not only fostered a peaceful transition but also ensured continuity in governance, which is essential for sustained development.
The camaraderie between Ambode and Sanwo-Olu is not just about personalities; it is about setting a precedent for how Nigerian politicians should conduct themselves. In a country where political rivalries often translate into governance failures, the peaceful and cooperative relationship between these two leaders offers a model for others to
follow. Their collaboration underscores the idea that progress is best achieved when leaders put aside personal ambitions for the greater good of the collective ambition of the people.
Against the foregoing backdrop, it is expedient to specifically in this context urge the governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his former deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu to wave the olive branch, and take a cue from the camaraderie that now exists between Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who are no doubt models of political cooperation.
In a similar vein, former Governor of Rivers State, now minister of the FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara should emulate the duo of Ambode and Sanwo-Olu so as to engender peace and good governance in Rivers.
The reason for the foregoing plea cannot be farfetched as the people of Edo State, and the people of Rivers State elected these politicians to lead them, and not to be embroiled in political conflicts. The politicians mentioned herein have a duty to rise above their differences and work together for the good of both states. By emulating the Ambode-Sanwo-olu camaraderie, they can demonstrate that leadership is not just about holding office but about ensuring that governance remains stable, effective, and focused on the needs of the people.
One of the most striking examples of this collaboration is the ongoing Lagos State Development Plan 2052, which Sanwo-Olu has continued to push forward, building on Ambode’s initiatives. The plan envisions transforming Lagos into Africa’s model megacity and global economic and financial hub. By working in tandem, even across different administrations, Ambode and Sanwo-Olu have demonstrated that long-term visions can be achieved when successive governments are willing to collaborate rather than tear down the efforts of their predecessors.
Moreover, their relationship serves as a reminder that politics should be about service to the people rather than personal gain. The ability to work together, even after a contested political battle, reflects a maturity that is crucial for the progress of any society. Nigerian politicians at all levels can learn from this example. The current challenges facing Nigeria, ranging from economic instability to insecurity, require leaders who can rise above petty squabbles and focus on the common good.
The bitter rivalries and acrimonious transitions that have marred Nigerian politics for decades have done little to advance the nation’s development. On the contrary, they have often led to stagnation, with each new administration more concerned with
undoing the work of its predecessor than building on it. This cycle of destruction and reconstruction has left Nigeria lagging behind many of its peers.
Without a doubt, the Ambode-Sanwolu relationship suggests a different path, one where political differences do not preclude cooperation, where the focus remains on governance rather than grudges. It is a path that Nigerian politicians must tread if the country is to move forward.
In urging Nigerian politicians to emulate the example set by Ambode and Sanwo-Olu, it is unarguably a call for a new era in Nigerian politics, one characterized by respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to progress. The camaraderie between these two leaders is a powerful reminder that politics can be a force for good, a means of achieving collective goals rather than a battleground for personal vendettas.
Therefore, as Nigeria navigates its complex political terrain, the Ambode-Sanwolu relationship stands as a testament to what is possible when leaders choose unity over division, progress over pettiness. It is a lesson that, if heeded, could pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
