Edwin Clark, Elder Statesman and Former Minister, Dies at 97

ABUJA/Nigeria: Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a former senator, Minister of Education, and a towering advocate for equity and justice in Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 97. The elder statesman, known for his unwavering commitment to the development of the Niger Delta and national unity, died on Monday night in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
His death comes just days after the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, marking the loss of yet another influential voice in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Clark, who hailed from Kiagbodo in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, was a formidable force in Nigeria’s political and legal spheres. As a lawyer and senator, he played a significant role in shaping legislative discourse, while his tenure as Minister of Education saw critical reforms aimed at improving Nigeria’s educational framework. Beyond his government service, he was a vocal advocate for resource control and the rights of the Niger Delta, championing policies that sought to address the region’s long-standing marginalization.
A statement issued by Prof. C. C. Clark on behalf of the family confirmed his passing: “The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday, 17th February, 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family.”
Clark’s influence spanned decades, shaping Nigeria’s political trajectory and advocating for justice, particularly for the people of the Niger Delta. His demise marks the end of an era for a nation that has long benefited from his statesmanship and dedication to fairness.
