DTSG Restates Commitment to Train Teachers on Emerging Technology

OWA-OYIBU/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has reiterated the resolve of the State Government (DTSG) to empower teachers with the necessary technical skills needed to function effectively in the emerging digital society.

Mrs. Ezewu stated this at the Teachers Professional Development Centre (TPDC), Owa Oyibu in Ika North East Local Government Area while declaring open, a week-long training for teachers on Technology and ICT in Education.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, the commissioner said that the initiative was geared towards ensuring that quality technology-oriented education was given to the children in school.

She noted that the teaching profession was critical to nation-building, adding that the state government would continue to train teachers in emerging fields, ranging from methodology to technology in education.

Mrs. Ezewu said that TPDC had continued to live up to its obligations to equip teachers with the current pedagogical tools and technological advancement in the teaching profession.

She stated that teachers in the state had made the state proud with their excellent performances in the Delta State Annual Teachers’ Award and the Maltina Teachers Award for Excellence.

In her welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, the University of Delta, Professor Stella Chiemeke, who was represented by Barr. Richard Omagbemi, aid that capacity building of teachers was key in improving the standard of the education sector.

She said that it was on that conviction that the training of teachers had to be sustained, even as she advised participants to take the training seriously.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Teachers Professional Development Centre, Dr. Tony   Dibashi, said that the world had become a global village through the emergence of ICT.

Dr. Dibashi , who stated that knowledge of ICT was important for teachers, said that  students were more ICT compliant than teachers at present;  hence, the need to train teachers in ICT.
