Downpour Causes Chaos on Warri’s Airport Road: Motorists and Commuters Suffer
WARRI/Nigeria: Motorists and commuters traversing the bustling Airport Road in Warri were left grappling with a multitude of challenges as a relentless downpour persisted for over six hours. The rain, which commenced at 11 a.m. and persisted until approximately 6 p.m., transformed the road into an impassable waterway, causing immense difficulties for both motorists and tricycle operators.
Concerned citizens pointed out that the substantial volume of water witnessed throughout the day was primarily a consequence of blocked drainage systems along the road. They urgently appealed to residents residing in the vicinity to desist from illegally disposing of refuse into the drains during rainy spells. These conscientious individuals emphasized the importance of their plea, as such actions exacerbate the flooding situation.
Moreover, they implored landlords along Warri’s Airport Road to take immediate action by ensuring their tenants and shop owners actively participate in the monthly environmental sanitation exercises mandated by the state. By doing so, they would contribute to the clearance of the drainage systems in front of their respective premises, effectively facilitating the proper disposal of debris extracted from the drains.
Some concerned individuals also called upon Mr. Ransom Onoyake, Chairman of the Uvwie Local Government Council, as well as the special environmental task force within the council, to enforce compliance among residents and shop owners regarding the monthly environmental exercises. Additionally, they urged the council chairman to establish a mobile court to penalize those who fail to partake in these exercises, thereby setting a precedent and deterring potential non-compliance.
The recent torrential rainfall in Warri and Effurun compelled a significant number of motorists and tricycle operators to halt their journeys, as floodwaters began seeping into their vehicles, resulting in damage. Recalling last year’s similar predicament, when the flood-prone Jakpa Road experienced inundation, it is worth noting that Mr. Ransom Onoyake, the Uvwie Council Chairman, had compelled landlords, residents, and shop owners in the area to proactively clean their drainage systems. This undertaking was closely supervised by the council chairman himself.
As the people of Warri and neighboring areas endure the aftermath of the downpour, it remains imperative for all stakeholders, from residents to local authorities, to work collectively in tackling the issue of blocked drainages. Only through concerted efforts can the adverse effects of heavy rainfall be mitigated, ensuring smoother transportation and safeguarding the well-being of the community.
