ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State has continued its reign as the undisputed champion of the National Youth Games (NYG), clinching victory for the eighth consecutive time at the 2024 edition held in Asaba. The state dominated the medal table, amassing 111 medals in total, with 46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze, reaffirming its superiority in the competition since its inception in 2013.
Lagos State secured second place with 65 medals—26 gold, 20 silver, and 19 bronze—while Edo State, Delta’s close competitor, finished third with 18 gold, 13 silver, and 28 bronze medals. The two states, Delta and Edo, were both carved out of the now-defunct Bendel State in 1991.
An elated Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, congratulated Team Delta for their outstanding performance. Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor applauded the athletes’ dedication and resilience during the games, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
“May I heartily congratulate the 35 states and Abuja for participating in this year’s Youth Games,” Oborevwori said. “I especially commend our young athletes for showcasing their talents and sportsmanship. You are the future of our nation, and we are immensely proud of your achievements.”
He praised the efforts of the medal winners, encouraging those who didn’t secure medals to remain hopeful and persistent. “To those of you who did not win any medal, do not despair; your participation is a victory in itself,” the governor added.
Governor Oborevwori also expressed his gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, the Local Organizing Committee, and all officials for ensuring the success of the games. “The Games have once again shown the power of sports to unite us, foster friendships, and showcase our rich cultural diversity,” he noted.
Highlighting Delta State’s commitment to sports development, the governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to improving sports infrastructure and providing opportunities for young talents. “Here in Delta, we are focused on developing grassroots sports and creating platforms for our youth to thrive. We look forward to welcoming you again next year for the 9th edition of the games,” Oborevwori said.
The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, represented by Mr. Patrick Okeke, Director of Grassroots Sports Development, commended Delta State for being a strong partner in advancing sports in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of the National Youth Games as a vital platform for discovering athletes who go on to represent the country in international competitions.
“The National Youth Games have achieved their purpose, and many athletes discovered here are now champions on global stages,” Enoh stated, also praising a standout athlete from Gombe State who won three gold medals in gymnastics.
Enoh added that the games have promoted peace, unity, and economic prosperity in the host state and surrounding areas, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Earlier, the Director-General of the Delta State Sports Commission and Secretary of the Local Organising Committee, Mr. Festus Ohwojero, thanked the government and people of Delta State for their support in hosting the event, expressing particular gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for his unwavering commitment to the success of the games.
