Delta Waste Management Board Disowns Alleged Demand Notice On Petroleum Dealers

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Waste Management Board has disowned a social media report, alleging the service of demand notices on the Petroleum Dealers Association, Delta State Chapter, Asaba branch by the board demanding the sum of N500, 000 fine for irregular waste disposal.
The association had threatened to shut down retail outlets of its members, as a way of compelling the relevant authorities to address the situation.
For the avoidance of doubt, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Waste Management Board, Hon. Emmanuel Chinye, wishes to State categorically that Board has not serve any demand notices on the Petroleum Dealers Association, Delta State Chapter, Asaba branch as it is only the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue through its accredited agencies/consultants that has the legal backing to serve demand notice in the State.
The Board wishes to state that it can only serve Contravention Notices to violators of the extant environmental laws after repeated sensitization and advocacy programmes, and the notices contained various offences with the stipulated fines, payable in multiple of ten by corporate bodies.
It is of note that the Delta State Waste Management Board has engaged three consultants to serve the Contravention Notices in the three Senatorial Districts of the state and the notices contained the phone number of the Board Chairman to enable any client in doubt of the identity of the consultants or in disagreement with the fine imposed to call for clarifications.
The Delta State Waste Management Board would continue to be guided by law in its operations and would not witch-hunt any individual or corporate body.
The Chairman of the Board, Hon. Chinye therefore urged residents of the state and owners of business premises to obey environmental laws as the Board would not hesitate to deal with violators.
