Delta Urges Contractors to Ensure Quality and Timely Project Delivery

OREROKPE/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has mobilised contractors engaged in various projects across the state, urging them to prioritise prompt and high-quality delivery. This call to action was made by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu, during a recent project inspection in Orerokpe, Okpe Local Government Area.

On Friday, Aniagwu inspected several key projects, including the newly awarded Benin Road, Old Amukpe Road with a spur to Ayemidejor Close in Sapele, as well as the Oviri-Okpe – Orerokpe Road and Ezesi Road in Orerokpe. Accompanied by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, and other officials, Aniagwu emphasised the importance of efficiency and quality in project execution.

The Commissioner noted that the government had mobilised contractors with 30 to 40 percent of the contract sums to ensure they could deliver projects swiftly amid ongoing economic price fluctuations. He urged contractors to uphold quality standards, stating, “We are appealing that they give us quality jobs and good speed.”

Aniagwu affirmed that the state would not compromise on these essential demands. “The Governor expects that the money of Deltans works for Deltans,” he added. He further explained that the government would not tolerate delays caused by contractors waiting for price variations and reiterated the importance of immediate action upon receiving contract awards.

The Commissioner provided updates on the ongoing construction in Sapele, which spans 15 kilometres, with 13.7 kilometres directly supervised by the ministry. He stated that contractors must accelerate their pace without sacrificing quality. “Governor Oborevwori will award jobs to companies based on their technical qualifications rather than political connections,” he remarked, highlighting a merit-based approach to contract awards.

Regarding the Benin Road project in Sapele, Aniagwu indicated that two major buildings would need to be demolished to clear the right of way. He reassured the public that the state government would compensate affected property owners, acknowledging that these structures were improperly erected along the road.

“In compensating the property owners, the government is being humane. How do you just wake up and build a house in the middle of a road?” he questioned, stressing the government’s commitment to reducing hardship during these challenging times. The state’s valuers have engaged with the property owners to reach a fair compromise.

At the 15.75-kilometre Oviri-Okpe – Orerokpe Road, Aniagwu praised the contractor for their swift and effective work, particularly in addressing failed portions of the road to facilitate commuter access during construction. This proactive approach is expected to enhance the overall travel experience for residents and visitors alike.
