Delta Unity Network Accuses State APC of Plotting Violent Protests
ASABA/Nigeria: Delta Unity Network, a pro-democracy movement, has accused the Delta State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) of planning to incite violent protests across the state starting August 1, 2024.
In a statement released by the chairman and convener, Dr. Kingsley Etaghene, and secretary, Hon. Douglas Nwanne, the group claimed to have uncovered a plot by Delta APC’s leadership to use hired street urchins to stage protests under the guise of economic hardship. The Integrity Group criticized the state APC for allegedly acting as an agent of destabilization, contrary to the directives of the national party leadership and President Bola Tinubu, who has warned against such protests nationwide.
The Delta Unity Network urged the federal government to intervene and called on Delta residents to reject any attempts to lure them into participating in acts of violence and lawlessness. The statement read:
“Delta Unity Network stands against any ill-conceived protest. No political group or individual in Delta should be allowed to incite the people to participate in selfish protests. The prevailing peace in the state under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration cannot be disrupted overnight by a few reactionary forces.
“Those who lost in the 2023 state governorship elections can continue to mourn their defeat, but not at the expense of the lives and destinies of susceptible Deltans. The people cannot be deceived.
“Bitter detractors planning to recruit hooligans to unleash social unrest in the state over alleged economic difficulties are mere hypocrites. There is no bad governance in Delta. They should direct their thoughtless aggression and frustration elsewhere. The Oborevwori administration is not responsible for the nationwide socio-economic distress Nigerians are facing.
“On the contrary, Governor Oborevwori has brought joy and fulfillment to the majority of Deltans. With appreciable infrastructure development and various empowerment programs aimed at poverty alleviation and wealth creation, Delta is working and making progress. The implementation of the governor’s laudable M.O.R.E Agenda is excellently on course.
“We join well-meaning Deltans to say no to protests inimical to the peace and development of our dear state,” the group stated.
