OGHARA/Nigeria: In a bid to revamp public primary school education in Delta State, the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has reassured parents of its commitment to creating a safe and conducive learning environment while ensuring quality education for their children.
Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Hon Samuel Mariere, reiterated this assurance during advocacy visits to Ethiope West and Sapele local government areas as part of the board’s efforts to engage critical stakeholders across the state’s 25 local government areas.
“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has mandated the board to implement transformational reforms at the primary school level,” Mariere emphasized, highlighting the significance of basic education as the foundation of societal advancement.
Mariere outlined various initiatives undertaken by the state government, including recruitment drives for teaching and non-teaching staff, capacity building programs, classroom renovations, staff promotions, and settlement of outstanding arrears to motivate workers.
To enhance the performance of public primary schools, Mariere announced plans to transfer head teachers of grade level 15 to Local Education Authority Offices, leveraging their experience in monitoring teachers for quality education.
Furthermore, Mariere stressed the government’s commitment to equitable deployment of teachers, advocating for the redeployment of educators who have served in rural areas for over three years to urban centers. He underscored that government reforms would not yield to lobbying pressures.
Addressing concerns of financial exploitation, Mariere warned head teachers against extorting money from parents, affirming that education in Delta State remains free. He urged teachers to focus on their responsibilities and collaborate with the government to restore educational standards.
Mariere urged community-based school management committees to safeguard school infrastructures, emphasizing collaboration between head teachers and community leaders. He called on the Local Education Authority and Quality Assurance Committee to enforce the reforms for improved teaching and learning outcomes.
Acknowledging community efforts, Mariere commended Ugbukurusu Community’s SBMC Chairman, Evang Friday Ayan, for employing three teachers and providing school materials, which resulted in increased enrollment. He announced plans for awards to recognize outstanding SBMCs.
Local government representatives and education secretaries pledged support for government reforms, while various unions expressed appreciation for recent employment opportunities and promised collaboration.
His Royal Majesty Noble Oyibob Eshemitan Uku-Oghara-name, Orefe 111, Ovie of Oghara kingdom, welcomed the education sector reforms and pledged community support for the government’s agenda.
