Delta State Marks 33 Years of Steady Progress, Says Oghenesivbe

ASABA/Nigeria: The Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. (Barr.) Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has lauded the significant progress made by Delta State in the 33 years since its creation, describing it as a cause for celebration.

Speaking on Monday during a courtesy visit by the state chapter of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at the Bureau’s headquarters in Asaba, Dr. Oghenesivbe highlighted the state’s remarkable transformation since its inception on August 27, 1991.

He noted that Delta State has evolved from having minimal infrastructure to becoming a major commercial and economic hub, attracting holidaymakers and fostering socioeconomic development.

“When Delta State was created 33 years ago, there was nothing on the ground in terms of infrastructure,” Oghenesivbe said.

“However, over the years, the state has made steady progress in all sectors, especially in infrastructure and socioeconomic development, making it a first-choice destination for many.

Dr. Oghenesivbe urged members of NAWOJ to focus on telling the positive stories of Delta State’s achievements under the leadership of various administrations, from Chief Felix Ibru to the present Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori. He praised the ongoing implementation of Governor Oborevwori’s MORE agenda, which he said is advancing the state beyond 2027.

He also highlighted the strides made in women’s empowerment and inclusion in mainstream politics, noting that 22 out of the 25 Vice Chairmen of local government councils are women, alongside a significant number of female councillors.

This, he said, reflects the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) commitment to promoting women in leadership roles.

Oghenesivbe called on NAWOJ to recognize and appreciate these developments by the Oborevwori administration and the PDP, emphasizing the government’s deliberate efforts to empower women and ensure their rightful place in governance and public service.

He also assured NAWOJ of the Bureau’s readiness to partner in sensitization campaigns, particularly in areas like domestic violence prevention and combating illicit drug use among teenagers, especially girls.”We are in a celebratory mood as Delta State turns 33 on Tuesday, with much to be grateful for,” Oghenesivbe remarked.

“The state has seen substantial progress in infrastructure, education, sports, transportation, and socioeconomic advancement. Delta is very peaceful compared to other states, and we are making steady progress.”

He encouraged NAWOJ to document and share these achievements through traditional and social media, underlining the state’s ongoing transformation into a construction hub with mega road projects at DSC Roundabout, PTI Junction, Effurun Roundabout, Enerhen Junction, and Marine Gate, all being executed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

“You are valuable partners as members of the fourth estate of the realm,” Oghenesivbe told NAWOJ.

“Our doors at the State Orientation and Communications Bureau are always open for collaboration to add value to governance in Delta State and society at large.”

Earlier, the State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Sonia Onobunjo, congratulated Dr. Oghenesivbe on his recent appointment, recognizing his extensive experience as a communication strategist and media manager.

She assured him of NAWOJ’s commitment to supporting the Bureau’s initiatives, including their upcoming Health Empowerment and Welfare Programme planned for September.”NAWOJ is poised to contribute to making the MORE agenda of His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a reality for all beyond 2027,” Onobunjo said.
