Delta State Introduces Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Program (TISHIP) to Enhance Student Access to Healthcare
ASABA/Nigeria: In a bid to prioritize the health needs of students across Delta State, the Delta State Contributory Health Commission launched the Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Program (TISHIP) at the Dennis Osadebay University main auditorium in Asaba. The initiative aims to grant students equitable access to primary and secondary healthcare services, regardless of their state of origin.
Under the newly introduced program, students are required to pay an annual premium of N7000 to enroll and gain access to the comprehensive healthcare scheme.
During the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Austin Obidi, Chairman of the governing board of the commission, commended the initiative, hailing it as a significant advancement in governance efforts.
“The introduction of TISHIP signifies a remarkable improvement in governance, demonstrating our commitment to prioritizing the health needs of our students,” remarked Dr. Obidi.
Further emphasizing the importance of the program, Olorogun Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, Director-General/CEO of the commission, highlighted its potential to alleviate the financial burden on parents and guardians.
Dr. Akpoveta underscored, “TISHIP will significantly reduce the out-of-pocket spending of parents and guardians, ensuring that students receive the healthcare they need without financial strain.”
As a testament to their dedication and contribution to the success of the program, an esteemed accolade of “Health Insurance Ambassador” was bestowed upon the Vice-Chancellor of Dennis Osadebay University, Prof. Ben Oghojafor. Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Christopher Chukwuji, Prof. Oghojafor’s efforts in championing the cause of student healthcare were recognized and celebrated.
The ceremony also featured a demonstration of the efficiency and effectiveness of the TISHIP registration process. As part of the demonstration, the Contributory Health Commission facilitated a mini-registration exercise, showcasing the seamless and expeditious nature of enrollment. Notably, two students registered on the spot, symbolizing the program’s immediate impact and accessibility.
With the launch of Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Program (TISHIP), Delta State takes a significant stride towards enhancing the overall health and well-being of its student populace, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive and accessible healthcare services.
