Delta State Governor Pledges Commitment to Outcome-Oriented Governance at Executive Council Retreat

ASABA/Nigeria: In a resolute declaration, the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, emphasized his administration’s unwavering dedication to delivering excellence through governance centered on processes and tangible results for the people of the state. Speaking at the 2023 Delta State Executive Council Retreat held at the Maryam Babangida Leisure Park in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori underscored the pivotal role of this gathering in aligning governmental entities with the administration’s policy focus.

The retreat, themed “Delivering the M.O.R.E Agenda for Advancing Delta: Strategies Enablers,” was deemed crucial by the Governor to ensure the synchronization of programs and activities among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with the administration’s overarching objectives.

Governor Oborevwori elucidated that the MORE agenda’s strategic imperatives have been distilled into measurable deliverables, enabling systematic tracking and reporting of progress. “These key performance indicators,” he noted, “will serve as yardsticks to gauge our administration’s advancement based on predefined timelines and benchmarks for success.”

Highlighting the significance of such indicators, the Governor outlined their role in fostering governmental efficiency, enhancing performance, ensuring MDA accountability, and fostering prudent resource utilization.

Expressing optimism, Governor Oborevwori envisioned this forum as the conduit to fulfilling the promises of the MORE agenda. He outlined the essential elements critical to achieving this objective: fiscal responsibility, inter-agency synergy, robust community engagement, effective public communication, innovative program execution, and top-notch service delivery.

Central to his administration’s policy thrust, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the establishment of a credible feedback mechanism, stressing, “MDAs must vigilantly monitor project progress within their purview and institute a feedback and evaluation mechanism.”

Asserting the administration’s commitment to excellence and results, Governor Oborevwori remarked, “This administration is inherently process-driven, result-oriented, and driven by a pursuit of excellence.”

He affirmed the administration’s dedication to propelling the state into an era that maximizes its potentials through the MORE agenda, urging Commissioners to endorse a Performance Bond to underscore their commitment to achieving established deliverables.

Reiterating the core focus of the MORE agenda as articulated in his inauguration speech, Governor Oborevwori emphasized its aim to stimulate inclusive and sustainable economic growth, foster private sector job creation, bolster human capital, fortify infrastructure, enhance public financial management, and elevate governance and accountability systems for improved service delivery.

“Effectively achieving these targets,” he asserted, “demands concerted thought and action from elected officials, political appointees, and civil servants privileged to serve.”

In a keynote speech addressing innovative strategies for building a state that caters to its citizens, Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, highlighted the repercussions of the global inflation caused by the pandemic three years prior. He emphasized the imperative for sub-national and local governments, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, to diligently work towards delivering tangible outcomes for their citizens amidst these challenges.

Governor Obaseki disclosed ongoing plans to repurchase shares in the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and stressed the necessity for collaborative efforts among Delta, Edo, Ekiti, and Ondo States in this endeavor.

The retreat commenced with the State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, extending gratitude to the Governor for organizing the event. He emphasized its significance in providing insights into the Agenda’s philosophy and vision, underlining the need for a new approach to governance.

Furthermore, Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Secretary to the State Government, delivered a comprehensive overview of the MORE Agenda’s thematic areas and specific focal points, emphasizing the roadmap to its successful implementation.
