Delta State Governor Orders Immediate Return to Site for Ibusa/Achalla/Asaba Road Phase II Construction Following Sub-Standard Execution

IBUSA/Nigeria: In a decisive move aimed at upholding infrastructure quality standards, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a directive for the prompt return of the contractor responsible for the construction of Ibusa/Achalla/Asaba Road Phase II (From KM6.83 to KM13.8) in Oshimili North/South Local Government Area.
The directive by Governor Oborevwori, emphasized the need for the contractor to adhere strictly to project specifications outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurements and Evaluation (BEME) and Bill of Quantity (BOQ).
The gubernatorial order came after the State Commissioner for Works Highways and Urban Roads, Comrade Reuben Izeze, provided a detailed report to the Governor following an on-site assessment carried out on January 9th, 2024.
The visit, prompted by a social media post that drew the attention of Governor Oborevwori, demonstrated the state’s commitment to eradicating sub-standard construction work.
Commissioner Izeze, expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of the project, accused the contractor of executing a sub-standard job deliberately, potentially jeopardizing the integrity of the entire project.
The Commissioner’s investigation revealed that the sub-standard work was carried out during the holidays without proper supervision by Ministry project site engineers.
“The quality of the job on the ground is sub-standard and in vast contrast with His Excellency’s vision to deliver quality projects to Deltans under the policy of meaningful development in the MORE Agenda,” stated Commissioner Izeze.
During the on-site inspection, Izeze highlighted concerns about the trapezoidal drains, where poor finishing was evident over a total length of 95 meters. He also criticized the use of a substandard concrete mix, visibly compromising the project’s structural integrity.
Residents in the vicinity echoed these concerns, voicing complaints and protests against the poor quality of work. They emphasized that such substandard construction does not align with the positive intentions of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and is unlikely to withstand the test of time.
Izeze expressed disappointment, remarking, “I can see that the most important part of the project is already being compromised, and why would anyone want to cut corners, how much will he save? See how the work site is; it is an embarrassment to the Governor and the good people of Delta State.”
Governor Oborevwori, committed to fiscal responsibility, urged contractors to uphold the specified standards, emphasizing that no compromises would be tolerated. “We will not accept any job that is below the standard specified in the Bills of engineering measurements (BEME) and Bill of Quantity (BOQ) because Governor Oborevwori has warned that on road infrastructure, there are no sacred cows,” added Commissioner Izeze.
