Delta State Governor Mourns the Passing of Elder Statesman and Labour Icon, Chief Frank Ovie Kokori

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed profound grief over the demise of Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, an esteemed elder statesman and former General Secretary of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers of Nigeria (NUPENG). Chief Kokori, a prominent figure in the labor movement, hailed from Ovu in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. He passed away on Thursday, coincidentally marking his 80th birth anniversary.

Chief Kokori rose to national prominence as a staunch pro-democracy activist, notably leading the charge for the revalidation of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election during the Abacha regime. His commitment to the principles of democracy and his unwavering advocacy for social justice earned him widespread respect and recognition.

Approximately a month ago, reports surfaced of Chief Kokori falling ill, prompting Governor Oborevwori to pay a visit to him at the hospital in Warri, underscoring the significance of his influence and dedication to the nation.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori conveyed heartfelt condolences to Chief Kokori’s family, the Ovu community, the Urhobo nation, as well as the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the All Progressives Congress (APC), acknowledging Chief Kokori’s significant contributions to labor movements and political discourse in Nigeria.

Describing Chief Kokori’s demise as a “monumental loss” not only to Delta State and Nigeria but to the global community, Governor Oborevwori praised the late elder statesman’s gallant efforts in advocating for the rights and welfare of the people. He reminisced about their recent encounter in the hospital, highlighting Chief Kokori’s unwavering spirit despite his ailment.

Governor Oborevwori expressed deep admiration for Chief Kokori’s patriotism, emphasizing the elder statesman’s remarkable role in the struggle for June 12 and the advancement of democracy in Nigeria. He pledged the full support of the Delta State government in organizing a fitting funeral to honor Chief Kokori’s legacy.

As the nation mourns the loss of this distinguished figure, Governor Oborevwori urged Chief Kokori’s family, friends, and associates to uphold the values and principles that defined his life, ensuring that his legacy of commitment to justice and democracy continues to inspire future generations.
