Delta State Government, NDLEA Partner on ‘Drug Free Delta’ Campaign in Secondary Schools

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government, through its Orientation and Communications Bureau, is collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to launch the “Drug Free Delta” campaign targeting secondary schools across the three senatorial districts of the state.
The NDLEA State Commander, Abubakar Wada Esq., and the Bureau’s Director General, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, held a strategic meeting on Tuesday to finalize preparations for the campaign. Wada emphasized the importance of a unified approach to combat drug abuse, revealing that a pre-campaign press conference is scheduled for January 28 at the State Bureau of Communications Conference Hall, Asaba.
The campaign’s formal launch will take place on February 3, 2025, at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba. According to Wada, the initiative will focus on sensitization in Delta Central, Delta North, and Delta South, highlighting the dangers of drug abuse and addiction among youths.
Dr. Oghenesivbe explained that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori initiated the program due to concerns over the rising drug abuse rates in the state. “The governor is committed to peacebuilding and security, and addressing drug abuse is key to this strategy,” he said.
Wada praised the governor’s support for law enforcement, noting that donated operational vehicles have enhanced the NDLEA’s capacity to intercept drug traffickers. He confirmed that over 300 offenders are currently being prosecuted in Delta State courts.
The campaign will also establish “War Against Drug Abuse” (WADA) clubs in schools, aiming to instill a drug-free culture among students. Wada expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating, “This initiative will create a safer, healthier environment for all students and residents in Delta State.”
