ASABA/Nigeria: In the wake of a devastating boat accident on the Niger River claiming lives, including that of renowned actor John Paul Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, the Delta State Government has issued a stern directive mandating safety measures for all journeys on its waterbodies involving actors and creatives.
Dr. Nnamdi Ijeh, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragedy in a letter dated April 11, 2024. He conveyed the sympathies of the Delta State Government and the creative community, emphasizing the need for safety precautions.
“On behalf of the Delta State Government, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the entire creative community in the State, I sympathize with the families of those who lost their lives in the process of expressing their creative talent,” Dr. Ijeh stated.
The commissioner highlighted the importance of safety measures, noting that the survivors of the accident were wearing life jackets. He stressed the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of its citizens and warned against embarking on water journeys without proper safety equipment.
“It is therefore very expedient that, at this time of grief, to say that henceforth, such journeys should not be embarked upon without life jackets, expert divers, and other safety precautions,” Dr. Ijeh emphasized.
The letter, also addressed to Dr. Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), concluded with prayers for the repose of the departed souls and a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens, especially those within the entertainment industry.
