Delta State Government Denies Borrowing Claims, Reiterates Financial Strength
ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has firmly refuted allegations of borrowing since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office on May 29, 2023. The State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, made this clarification during a press conference in Asaba on Friday, describing the claims as baseless and unfounded.
Tilije categorically stated that the Oborevwori administration has not entered into any borrowing arrangement, whether with local, national, or international institutions. “This state has not entered into any borrowing relationship whatsoever. We have not borrowed a dime since this administration took effect on May 29, 2023,” he asserted.
Highlighting the state’s financial resilience, Tilije said, “Delta State remains the strongest financial state in this country. I say this with emphasis because I know the finances of the state. We are clearly the most financially stable state in Nigeria, and I am ready to defend this position anytime, anywhere.”
Tilije emphasized that despite avoiding debt, the state has been proactive in fulfilling its financial obligations, including payments for construction projects and settling existing debts. He revealed that the government has adopted a policy of making substantial advance payments to contractors to mitigate the effects of inflation and ensure timely project delivery.
“Virtually all major contracts now receive between 30% to 40% advance payments. Discussions are ongoing to increase this to 70% during this dry season to avoid contract reviews due to inflation,” he explained.
In addition to financial stability, Tilije highlighted the administration’s commitment to creating value for Deltans by ensuring adequate funding for all projects. He reiterated, “As Commissioner for Finance, I categorically state that we have not borrowed any kobo from any institution since May 29, 2023.”
Adding his voice, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, praised Governor Oborevwori’s integrity and transparent leadership. Aniagwu dismissed reports suggesting Delta State topped the borrowing chart, labeling them as false.
“Governor Oborevwori has demonstrated impeccable integrity and transparency in managing the state’s resources. All the projects embarked upon in the last 19 and a half months have been funded from the state’s available resources. We have not borrowed a penny,” Aniagwu stated.
He further emphasized the state’s strong liquidity position, noting that the administration’s efficient resource management has enabled it to address developmental challenges effectively. “Delta State is not just liquid; we are solidly liquid. This reflects the management skills of the Oborevwori administration,” Aniagwu added.
The state government’s unequivocal stance underscores its commitment to prudent fiscal management and its determination to counter misinformation regarding its financial policies.
