Delta State Communication Chief Urges Online Editors to Uphold Gatekeeping Standards Amidst Misinformation Concerns
ASABA/Nigeria: Online newspaper editors in Nigeria have been urged to rigorously apply traditional gatekeeping practices to prevent the spread of fake news and misinformation. Dr. (Barrister) Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, made this call on Wednesday during his appearance on Bridge FM Radio’s prime time talk show, “Bridge Parliament.”
Speaking on the program, Dr. Oghenesivbe emphasized the importance of verifying facts before publishing, particularly in light of a recent unfounded allegation against Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
He clarified that Governor Oborevwori has not borrowed any funds from any financial institution, either within Nigeria or internationally, debunking claims circulated by an online publication.
Dr. Oghenesivbe highlighted that Governor Oborevwori’s administration is rapidly advancing Delta State’s development through the MORE agenda, which focuses on mega infrastructure projects across the state. He assured that the state government remains committed to managing the commonwealth of Deltans prudently to enhance socioeconomic prosperity.
The Director General also addressed the controversy surrounding a N40 billion facility secured by local government councils to pay pensioners. He explained that the facility is being repaid through deductions from the councils’ federal allocations, and the state government merely acted as a guarantor, as previously clarified by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Michael Osuoza.
Dr. Oghenesivbe expressed disappointment over the publication of the misleading report, describing it as unfortunate, unpatriotic, and libelous. He noted that the increasing publication of half-truths and deliberate misinformation by some online platforms is eroding public confidence. He stressed that editors and subeditors have a professional responsibility to verify the accuracy of the content they approve for publication.
“It is the duty of editors to ensure that any material published is credible and factual,” Dr. Oghenesivbe stated. “There is no record of Governor Oborevwori borrowing a kobo from any bank, and such claims should be disregarded.”
Reflecting on Delta State’s 33rd anniversary, Dr. Oghenesivbe praised the state’s progress since 1999 and expressed confidence that Governor Oborevwori’s tenure, which runs until 2031, will leave a lasting legacy. He commended the governor’s visionary leadership and his dedication to advancing socioeconomic and infrastructure development, education, sports, tourism, agriculture, and healthcare through the MORE agenda.
He concluded by acknowledging the contributions of past military administrators and governors to Delta State’s development, assuring that Governor Oborevwori’s administration would continue to build on their legacies, aiming to make Delta a state of pride for all its residents.
