Delta State Commissioner Defends Quality of Flyover Project Amidst Allegations

WARRI/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has reaffirmed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s unwavering commitment to quality in project delivery, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for substandard work and corrupt practices.

During an unscheduled inspection of the ongoing flyover bridge construction at PTI Junction in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, Izeze addressed the media, dispelling rumors circulating in a viral video. The video alleged that 10mm rods were being used for the project, contrary to the 16mm specified in the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation (BEME).

“The reason we are here today is to address a malicious claim that the rods being used for the project are 10 millimeters in diameter, which is simply untrue,” Izeze stated firmly. “This project has been designed by some of the best engineers in the country and is being supervised by top professionals within the Ministry of Works.”

Izeze highlighted the governor’s history of insisting on excellence, noting that Governor Oborevwori, known for his dedication to quality, personally oversaw the construction of the Osubi Airstrip over two decades ago. The governor has visited the flyover site numerous times, underscoring his commitment to giving Warri and Uvwie a much-needed infrastructural facelift.

“In his pursuit of quality projects, the governor has mandated a dual certification process,” Izeze explained. “After the Ministry of Works certifies a project, the Special Project unit will also conduct its own certification. This illustrates his deep concern for the quality of his projects.”

Addressing the specific allegations, Izeze clarified, “We have measured the rods with a vernier caliper, and they are indeed 16.0mm. The misinformation being spread by this individual is completely unfounded.”

Supporting Izeze’s statements, Mr. Thomas Haug, the Project Manager for Julius Berger, confirmed that the rods being used are 16mm and imported, ensuring the project’s adherence to international standards. “We are working according to specifications, and we are confident that the project will stand the test of time,” Haug asserted.

The commissioner concluded by emphasizing that Governor Oborevwori’s administration is dedicated to leaving a legacy of durable infrastructure projects that will not succumb to the elements after just a few rainy seasons.
