Delta State Affirms Commitment to Engineering Excellence with COREN Act Domestication

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, announced on Thursday that the state has successfully domesticated the Engineering Regulations Monitoring Programme, aiming to enhance the quality of job delivery across the state.

The initiative includes the creation of the State Technical Committee and the Delta State Expatriate Monitoring Committee, both established in accordance with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN) Act, to oversee the quality of engineering projects.

Governor Oborevwori made this disclosure while receiving the President and Chairman of the Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, and her delegation at Government House, Asaba.

Congratulating Oguntala on her historic position as the 34th and first female President of the NSE, the governor praised the engineering profession in Nigeria for its significant progress over the past two decades.

“In Delta State, we have since domesticated the Engineering Regulations Monitoring Programme with the creation of the State Technical Committee and Delta State Expatriate Monitoring Committee in accordance with the COREN Act to monitor the quality of jobs,” Oborevwori stated.

“I believe that the Engineering Regulations Monitoring Programme will strengthen the existing quality control mechanism and boost the practice of engineering in the state.”

He further emphasized the state’s commitment to capacity building, noting, “It might also interest you to know that we have a policy of regularly organizing training and special courses for engineers in the civil service to update their knowledge and skills on a continual basis. We believe in capacity; hence we appoint qualified engineers into the positions of Director and Permanent Secretary in relevant fields.”

Governor Oborevwori highlighted the state’s zero tolerance for sub-standard projects, citing the engagement of Julius Berger Plc for key infrastructural developments, including three flyovers, a cloverleaf, pedestrian bridges, and road expansion projects in Warri and Effurun metropolis.

Earlier, Engr. Oguntala commended Governor Oborevwori for the developmental strides of his administration, noting that the NSE delegation was in the state for the society’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. She urged the state government to continue its capacity-building initiatives for engineers through dedicated training programs, asserting that the NSE is well-positioned to partner with the government on such efforts.

“The implementation of an enhanced salary scale for engineers further underscores your administration’s dedication to promoting an environment where engineering professionals can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the state,” Oguntala remarked.

She also recommended that qualified engineers should lead engineering-related ministries, departments, and agencies in the state.
