Delta Receives AI-Assisted X-Ray Machines to Boost Tuberculosis Detection

By Donald Ojebo

ASABA/Nigeria: In a significant move to enhance the fight against Tuberculosis (TB), the Delta State government has taken delivery of its first batch of mobile digital AI-assisted X-ray machines, aimed at improving early detection and combating the spread of the disease.

Receiving the equipment in Asaba on behalf of the state government, Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, commended the KNCV Foundation and the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) for their support.

He highlighted the importance of the partnership in the state’s battle against Tuberculosis, particularly in areas with high infection rates.

“This collaboration aims to intensify efforts to eradicate Tuberculosis by enhancing diagnostic capabilities, especially in underserved and high-burden areas of the state,” Dr. Onojaeme stated. He noted that the new machines would be deployed to Ughelli North, Ika South, and Ethiope West council areas, where TB cases are most prevalent. “By strengthening our diagnostic network, we can identify and treat more cases, reduce transmission, and ultimately save lives,” he added.

Dr. Francis Bakpa, the State Tuberculosis Programme Manager, explained that the AI-assisted machines are not limited to hospitals but are designed for field use, making diagnosis more accessible in hard-to-reach communities. He also revealed that over 300 of these advanced machines are being deployed nationwide through the collaboration between KNCV and the National TB Programme to support Nigeria’s goal of eliminating Tuberculosis and leprosy.

This initiative marks a major step forward in improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations in Delta State.
