Delta Police Kill Suspects in Failed Kidnap Attempt of Assembly Member’s Wife

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command has announced the killing of suspects involved in the failed kidnapping of the wife of a Delta State House of Assembly member on 2nd September 2024. The botched abduction, which occurred at Okoloba Junction along Jakpa Road in Uvwie Local Government Area, tragically claimed the lives of two mobile policemen and the driver, Mr. David Imela.

The police announcement was made in a press release issued today, 6th October 2024, by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright. The statement detailed the swift actions taken by Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, who immediately ordered the deployment of heightened security measures around Warri and its environs. These measures included narrowing key roads and blocking all exit points to prevent the kidnappers’ escape.

According to the release, “Acting swiftly on intelligence, operatives from the Ebrumede Police Division, led by Divisional Police Officer (DPO) CSP Iwok Ndifereke, strategically created a traffic hold-up at the DSC roundabout.” The kidnappers’ vehicle, matching the description and registration number provided by witnesses, was soon sighted. “Upon realising they had been cornered, the kidnappers opened fire on the officers.”

The police, responding cautiously due to the busy location, returned fire, forcing the kidnappers to abandon their bullet-riddled vehicle and flee with gunshot wounds. Three AK-47 rifles and the suspects’ operational vehicle, with registration number WWR-436-GZ, were recovered at the scene.

Determined to bring the criminals to justice, CP Abaniwonda directed CSP Ndifereke to intensify the search for the fleeing suspects. On 3rd October 2024, police operatives traced the gang to their hideout in Agbarho, where a fierce gunfight ensued. The officers overpowered the kidnappers, leaving three of the suspects severely injured. They were later confirmed dead at the hospital. Another AK-47 rifle was recovered during the operation, and the search for the remaining members of the gang continues.

CP Abaniwonda commended the bravery and professionalism of CSP Ndifereke and his team, encouraging other officers to emulate their courage and dedication. The Command also reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, confirming that efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are being intensified.
