Delta PDP Blasts APC for Spreading Falsehoods on State’s Financial Health
ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent statements by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, describing them as misguided and duplicitous.
The PDP accused the APC of attempting to misinform the public about the debt management strategies being implemented by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.
In a strongly worded response signed by the State Secretary, Engr. Dan Ossai, the PDP dismissed the APC’s claims as a shameless act of propaganda. The party emphasized that Oborevwori’s efforts to reduce the state’s debt profile are a mark of responsible leadership, aimed at ensuring greater financial stability and economic health for Delta State.
The PDP reminded the public that the current national debt crisis originated from the reckless borrowing practices under the APC-led federal government, which escalated the national debt from N7 trillion in 2015 to over N90 trillion by 2023.
The party highlighted that this massive debt burden has left the nation in a situation where 97% of its revenue is now devoted to debt servicing, severely impacting revenue allocations to states and local governments.
The PDP also criticized the APC for its poor management of the nation’s crude oil production and the devaluation of the Naira, which have contributed to the current economic challenges. The party cited the former Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, who admitted in 2021 that the country was facing severe revenue shortfalls, leading to increased borrowing.
The statement also referenced the current Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, who recently disclosed that the APC government had resorted to printing money aimlessly, further exacerbating inflation and economic instability.
Despite the APC’s criticism, the PDP lauded Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to reducing the state’s debt and managing its finances prudently. The party noted that the governor has not borrowed any funds in nearly 15 months, despite the ongoing execution of major infrastructure projects and social welfare programs across the state. Instead, the governor has saved over N205 billion and reduced the state’s debt profile by N180 billion.
The PDP concluded by asserting that the APC’s criticism is a reflection of its failed governance at the national level and reaffirmed Governor Oborevwori’s determination to lead Delta State towards a debt-free future. The party urged the public to disregard the APC’s misleading propaganda and trust in the governor’s responsible and transparent management of the state’s finances.
