Delta NUJ Congratulates Newly Sworn-In LG Chairmen, Calls For Appointment Of Members As Media Aides
ASABA/Nigeria: The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has congratulated the newly elected chairmen of the 25 Local Government Councils of Delta State on their victory at the just concluded local government elections in the state with a call on them to appoint only registered journalists as their media aides.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the state council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, and the Secretary, Comrade Patrick Ochei in Asaba, the state capital, the union urged the chairmen to ensure the general wellbeing of the rural populace, adding that they should shun quackery by appointing only qualified and registered journalists as their media aides to publicise the activities of the councils in the state.
The statement added that the union was taking “this stance because that position is exclusively for media professionals who must be able to relate with their colleagues in the field for cordiality and proper information management.”
“Again, it would afford us the opportunity to continue with our media engagement with the council chairmen. It should be noted that most of them as candidates for the elections that brought them in as chairmen failed to honour the invitation of the union to participate in the One on One Engagement to validate their programmes on ground to administer the grassroots populace.”
“We were appeased as a result of our understanding of the period and the pressure that comes with election campaigns and mobilisations.”
“However, the engagement will not be phased out but will continue with those already in office, so that together we will make the local government administration effective.”
“In a nutshell, we want to commend the Delta State Government, DSIEC, the political parties and stakeholders for ensuring peaceful and successful councils election in the State.
“Above all, we appreciate our members who covered the elections for their professional conducts and most importantly, heeding our advice to report objectively and ensure their safety while on duty. We have counted and we are happy that our members are complete after the elections.”
“We also commend the security agencies for their cooperation with our members and, of course, their effective policing during the election,” the system added.
