ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has extended his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the military high command for the withdrawal of troops from the troubled Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, May 8, 2023 Governor Oborevwori emphasized the significance of the troop withdrawal, highlighting the newfound safety for the residents of Okuama to return home and commence the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction.
“My Dear Good People of Delta State, I have the pleasure to announce to you that, upon many deliberations and collaborations between the State Government and the Military Leadership, the Nigerian Army has agreed to withdraw its officers and men from Okuama,” stated Governor Oborevwori.
Expressing his appreciation for the cooperation received, the Governor commended President Buhari, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Nigerian Army hierarchy for their understanding and assistance in resolving the situation.
Furthermore, Governor Oborevwori extended his gratitude to members of the National Assembly, distinguished Nigerians, traditional rulers, and other leaders who stood in solidarity with the state throughout the Okuama crisis.
“As the people of Okuama start the process of returning to their homes, I pledge the commitment of the Delta State Government to make that process smooth and seamless,” affirmed Governor Oborevwori.
Acknowledging the shared responsibility for security, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the importance of community cooperation to maintain peace and safety in Delta State.
The Governor also outlined the state government’s efforts in setting up an Internally Displaced Persons camp at Ewu to facilitate the rehabilitation of Okuama residents, ensuring they receive the necessary support for resettlement.
“It is my prayer and belief that NEVER AGAIN would Delta experience the kind of tragedy that happened in Okuama,” asserted Governor Oborevwori, reiterating the administration’s commitment to enhanced peace and security in the state.
In conclusion, Governor Oborevwori expressed his condolences to the families of victims affected by the Okuama incident, reaffirming the state’s dedication to preventing such tragedies in the future.
