Delta Government Urges Collective Action to Mitigate Natural Disasters

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has called on residents, stakeholders, and organizations to take proactive steps in reducing the impact of natural disasters, particularly flooding and erosion.

Speaking at a press conference in Asaba on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, emphasized the importance of community engagement and sustainable practices in safeguarding lives and property. His remarks followed Wednesday’s heavy rainfall, which caused severe flooding along Old Lagos-Agbor Road in Boji-Boji Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.

Aniagwu highlighted the government’s ongoing flood control measures, including dual drains and storm drainage projects across the state. He noted that while areas like Asaba had fared better due to these interventions, public cooperation was essential to prevent blockages caused by indiscriminate waste disposal.

Expressing sympathy for residents affected by the Agbor flooding, Aniagwu pointed out similar incidents in developed nations like Dubai and Spain, stressing that even advanced societies experience extreme weather events. He urged residents to avoid politicizing natural disasters and instead support government efforts in tackling environmental challenges.

The Commissioner warned against dumping refuse into drains, explaining that such actions undermine their capacity and cause water to overflow onto roads. He attributed the Agbor flood to intense rainfall and human activities that obstruct smaller tributary drains, urging residents to adopt responsible environmental habits to prevent future occurrences.
