Delta Government Approves Key Road Projects and University Expansion
ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has approved a series of infrastructure projects, including the construction of major roads in Ndokwa West Local Government Area and the development of a new College of Medical Sciences at the Delta State University of Science and Technology (DSUST), Ozoro.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, during a press briefing on Wednesday following the State Executive Council (Exco) meeting, which was presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba.
Dr Osuoza revealed that the council approved the construction of the Utagba-Uno/Ndemili Road (Phase 1) and the Eweshi-Utagba-Uno Road, both located in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to improve road connectivity.
Additionally, the council approved the establishment of a College of Medical Sciences at DSUST, which will be situated in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area. In a related move, compensation has been approved for land acquired by the state for the development of the Orerokpe campus of the university.
Osuoza, who was joined by Commissioners for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, and Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu, alongside other top officials, announced several other key projects. These include the construction of internal roads at the Nigerian Army’s 63 Brigade Headquarters in Ibusa, the construction of Aziken Avenue at DDPA Low Cost Housing Estate, Boji-Boji Agbor, and the main access road to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun.
Further projects approved include the rehabilitation of Odimodi/Okonto/Ogulaha Road in Burutu Local Government Area, as well as the construction of internal roads in Kiagbodo and Sokoh Estate Road, Off Airport Road, Effurun.
Exco also approved the construction of new roads across various local government areas, including the Uduophori Secondary Commercial School Road in Patani, Ofuegbe Street in Amai, and the Oloma/Eyewuoma internal roads at Koko Beach in Warri North. These efforts are part of the Oborevwori administration’s MORE Agenda, which seeks to ensure widespread development across all three senatorial districts of the state.
Dr Osuoza further announced that the council had approved counterpart funding for the Delta State AUDA/NEPAD initiative, aimed at strengthening smallholder farmers’ capabilities amid the challenges of COVID-19, with a focus on land restoration.
In addition to these projects, the council ratified the appointments of two new traditional rulers: His Royal Majesty, Prince Samuel Akpomieme Fuludu, as the Pere of Ngbelebri-Mein Kingdom in Burutu Local Government Area, and His Royal Majesty, Simon Wajutome Odhomo, Igbogidi I, as the Odiologbo of Irri Kingdom in Isoko South.
Speaking on the road network, Aniagwu emphasised that Governor Oborevwori’s administration had a comprehensive view of the state’s needs, leading to the approval of 11 new road projects under the Ministry of Works (Rural and Riverine Roads). He also highlighted the governor’s commitment to swiftly addressing the failed sections of the Benin-Asaba Highway, which have caused significant discomfort for commuters.
Hon Reuben Izeze added that work is progressing on previously approved road projects, affirming the state government’s dedication to ensuring meaningful development in line with the MORE Agenda.
