Delta Gets New Auditor General

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State House of Assembly Tuesday, has confirmed the appointment of Mrs. Veronica Awele Okonji as the Auditor General (State).

The confirmation was a sequel to the successful screening of the nominee whose name was forwarded to the House for appointment by the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa had in a letter read on the floor of the House at plenary, presided by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Ochor Christopher Ochor, said the position of Auditor General, State, became vacant following the retirement of the erstwhile Auditor General of the state, Mr. Paul Oghene Aghanenu, having attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

Dr Okowa explained that in the exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 126, sub-section One of the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, he was nominating Mrs. Okonji as the new Auditor General, State.

He solicited early consideration and confirmation of the nominee to enable him to affect the appointment in line with the Constitution.

The nominee was presented for the screening exercise by the member representing Oshimili North and Chief Whip of the House, Hon Pat Ajudua.

The appointment was confirmed following a motion to that effect by the Majority Leader, Ferguson Onwo, seconded by the Deputy Chief Whip, Solomon Ighrakpata, and adopted.

The Deputy Speaker congratulated Mrs. Okonji for the appointment and urged her to leave up to expectations.

Also at plenary, the House adopted the report of the ad-hoc committee on the Draft Legislative Agenda of the Seventh Assembly and Review of the Rules of the House.

The motion to the adoption of the new legislative document was moved by the Majority Leader, Ferguson Onwo, and unanimously approved.

The Deputy Speaker, Ochor Christopher Ochor who presided over the plenary, described the development as a milestone in the Delta State legislature.

The House took the first reading on a bill for a law to establish the Delta State Sickle Cell Disorder Control Programme for the Prevention and Treatment of Sickle Cell Disorder and the Establishment of Sickle Cell Treatment Centers and other related purposes.
