Delta Dominates Swimming, Imo Storms Wrestling Finals as Niger Delta Sports Festival Heats Up

UYO/Nigeria: Day 3 of the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) delivered a spectacle of high-stakes competition, with athletes from across the region battling for supremacy in swimming, traditional wrestling, chess, tennis, and more.
Delta State stamped its authority in the swimming events, clinching gold in both the men’s 50m Butterfly Finals and the men’s team event, reaffirming its status as a powerhouse in aquatic sports. Uraiah Patrick added another gold to Delta’s haul with a commanding victory in the men’s Chess Rapid Event.
Imo State asserted dominance in traditional wrestling, powering through to the finals with six victories out of eight semi-final bouts across both men’s and women’s categories. The intense matches thrilled fans and left no doubt about Imo’s intention to secure the top wrestling title.
In the under-63kg category of combat sports, Edo State’s Raheem Ridwan showcased clinical precision, defeating Ondo State’s Ojo Victor 5-0 in a one-sided bout.
Bayelsa State reigned supreme in the women’s Chess Rapid Event, achieving a clean medal sweep. Deborah Ebimobo clinched the gold ahead of fellow Bayelsan Pelomoh Jessica, while Edo’s Ebiakpo Sunshine and Osayande Kingsley shared third place honors.
Tennis action at the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre saw Team Akwa Ibom edge out Team Edo in the women’s doubles quarterfinals. In singles play, Edo’s Lorelay Holzendorff engaged in a grueling 90-minute showdown, edging out Olaniyan Adesewa in back-to-back tiebreaks, 5-4(2), 5-4(5). Holzendorff now advances to the semifinals to face Akwa Ibom’s Etoro Bassey.
The pace shows no sign of slowing as Day 5 opens with a Golf Kitty demonstration at the Ibom Icon Hotel Golf Resort. Finals are set across multiple indoor and para-athletic events including Shot Put F/40 Women Final, Triple Jump Women Final, Para-athletics Hammer Throw Women Final, and medal rounds in swimming, traditional wrestling, and weightlifting.
With each event, the Niger Delta Sports Festival continues to raise the bar in showcasing regional athletic talent and competitive spirit.
