Delta Deputy Speaker Urges Heightened Public Awareness on Legislative Actions
ASABA/Nigeria: In a bid to enhance public engagement and understanding of legislative activities, the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon (Chief) Arthur Akpowowo, has advocated for a stronger partnership between the mass media and the Assembly.
Akpowowo emphasized the necessity during a session with Assembly Correspondents following Wednesday’s plenary session, chaired by Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, the Speaker of the Assembly.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Compliance, Akpowowo expressed concern over the lack of public awareness regarding numerous bills and resolutions passed by the Assembly, despite being signed into law by the Governor.
Highlighting the indispensable role of the rule of law in societal progress, Akpowowo underscored recent events in the state that underscored the importance of implementing laws and resolutions effectively.
He cited examples such as the Delta State Livestock law, lamenting that many citizens were unaware of its existence. Akpowowo urged the State Orientation Bureau to step up efforts in educating the public about existing laws and their enforcement.
Moreover, Akpowowo praised the Assembly Press Corp for their efforts in increasing the visibility of the state legislature. He particularly lauded the appointment of Mr. Nkem Nwaeke, a seasoned reporter, as Chief Press Secretary by the Speaker, Rt Hon Emomotimi Dennis Guwor.
In addressing other pertinent issues, the Deputy Speaker condemned the disorderly conduct of some Okada riders in the state capital, calling for stricter enforcement of the ban on Okada operations in the metropolis.
Accompanied by Chief Jaro Egbo, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport, Akpowowo reassured Deltans of the Assembly’s dedication to peace and effective governance.
Chief Egbo echoed Akpowowo’s sentiments, lauding the media’s positive portrayal of the state and affirming the progress of the MORE agenda of the state government. He also commended the fruitful collaboration between the Executive and the State Assembly in advancing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Advancing Delta Project.
