Delta Deputy Governor Ask Nigerians to Combat Tribalism and Embrace Merit-Based Treatment
ASABA/Nigeria: Sir Monday Onyeme, the Deputy Governor of Delta State, has called on all Nigerians to take active measures against tribalism.
The Deputy Governor made this statement during a courtesy visit from HRM Barr. Oghenejabor Augustine, the Odiologbo of Ibrede Kingdom in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Sir Onyeme emphasized the importance of treating individuals based on merit rather than their ethnic backgrounds. He highlighted that tribalism is a significant hindrance to the country’s progress and urged citizens to view themselves primarily as Nigerians, setting tribal differences aside.
The Deputy Governor expressed concerns about the prevalent use of local government and state of origin identification letters in matters like employment, asserting that such practices do not contribute to the nation’s development. He questioned the relevance of one’s state of origin in determining one’s professional qualifications, using the example of hiring an Accountant.
On the administration of the Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, he reassured the people of Ibrede there would be no discrimination based on language, tribe, or any other factor. He emphasized that the government would ensure a fair and even distribution of infrastructure across the state.
In response to the Deputy Governor’s call, the Odiologbo of Ibrede requested political patronage and investment in the region, particularly in the areas of appointments and infrastructure provision. He conveyed that the Isoko-speaking people of Ndokwa East, who are predominantly members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seek equitable treatment and support from the government.
