Delta Confirms Dead of Lassa Fever Victim

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Ministry of Health has confirmed the dead of a victim of Lassa fever in the state, as it equally gave the efforts been put in place to curtail further spread of the diseases.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr.  Isioma Okogba disclosed today, Monday September 17, 2018 at ministry of information conference Hall Asaba, while briefing the press, on the achievement of her ministry in promoting health care in the state.

According to the commissioner, the ministry of health in collaboration with the Delta State Primary Health Development Agency has activated the state epidemiology centre, to combat such diseases.
she said the who is  from Umuolo in Ndokwa east local government area died on August 29, 2018 at FMC Asaba, and the ministry, using its surveillance notification offices is monitoring the area including Ndokwa West in to check further spread.

Dr. Okogba further stated that the ministry had carried out monitoring and quarantine of all the help workers that took care of the patient.

The commissioner to further increase the awareness on the need to check the spread of the disease, the ministry of in collaboration of Delta state Primary Health Development Agency, has  activated all the disease surveillance education offices across the 25 local government.

The commissioner also used the briefing to disclosed the on a case of monkey pox which happened on the 10 August 2018, involving a naval  officer from Adonishi in Rivers State who was travelling to United kingdom was said to have stopped  by to see his family in Effurun and was  diagnosed with monkey pox on arrival.
She said the ministry has deployed epidemiology and disease surveillance officers to do a contact tracing in his family at ware and Adonishi but no one has shown any sign of monkey pox.
According to the director for immunization and disease control, Dr. Paul Nkore in his speech said that lassa fever is a viral disease and they are other disease that can cause same disease known as haemorrhage, bleeding from the nose, ear, mouth and Virginia.
He said that the disease is closely related to rat and is called the multi momade rat, it has a lot of breast and can easily infect people by urinating on food thereby causing Lassa fever. He encouraged the public to always protect themselves by covering their food and always ensure to report any suspected issue of Lassa fever to the nearest health  centre
