UGHELLI/Nigeria: In a harrowing turn of events, the serene Okuama community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has been transformed into a scene of devastation and sorrow. The tranquility of the coastal community was shattered by the ruthless killing of sixteen soldiers, which was followed by burning of the village by suspected military personals from the 91 Amphibious Brigade stations in Bomadi.
Amidst the chaos and horror, the State Governor, Rt. Hon Sheriff Obrevwori, and the Senator representing Delta Central, have called for calm, condemning the gruesome murder of the security personnel.
Speculations swirl amid the ashes and rubble, suggesting a chilling possibility that some among the ranks of the military may have orchestrated the heinous act in a vengeful response to the loss of their comrades.
However, under the leadership of Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army, relentless efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. Reports indicate that several arrests have already been made, signaling a determined pursuit of justice amidst the chaos and uncertainty gripping the region.
Fear has however, gripped the residents who have fled in droves to seek refuge in neighboring Ughelli, fearing a reprisal from the very soldiers tasked with protecting them. The once vibrant community now lies deserted, its streets haunted by the specter of violence and retribution.
In the early hours of Saturday, the grim task of recovery fell upon the shoulders of soldiers from the joint task force, led by Major General Abdussalam. Fourteen lifeless bodies, bearing the unmistakable scars of brutality, were retrieved from the ruins of with details emerging of soldiers beheaded, their bodies mutilated in a savage display of savagery.
The gravity of the situation has not escaped the attention of the highest echelons of military command, with Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa ordering a comprehensive probe into the tragic events that unfolded in Okuama. The senseless loss of four senior officers and twelve soldiers has sent shockwaves through the nation, prompting soul-searching and calls for accountability.
Meanwhile, Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has called on all parties involved in the ongoing crisis to sheath their swords for the sake of humanity. He urged the State and Federal Government to urgently intervene to de-escalate the crisis, which has claimed more than 18 lives, including soldiers.
