Delta Assembly Committee Urges Prudent Fund Management by MDAs

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta House of Assembly Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Humanitarian Support Services, and Girl Child Entrepreneurship has urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to manage their funds prudently.

The Committee’s Chairman, Mrs. Bridget Anyafulu, made this call during an oversight visit to the tripartite ministries under her purview on Thursday in Asaba. She emphasized the need for efficient use of budgetary allocations to implement the policies and programs of the State Government’s ‘MORE Agenda.’

“I urge them to be prudent and make sure they utilize every dollar budgeted for their ministries so that the people of the State can see that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration is inclusive,” Anyafulu stated.

Anyafulu, representing Oshimili South Constituency, highlighted the constitutional responsibility of oversight functions to ensure MDAs perform optimally. “It is our constitutional duty to carry out oversight functions. This is one of the reasons we are elected into the State House of Assembly.”

She added, “We have met with the three ministries involved in our committee to ensure that budgeted funds are used judiciously. We are pleased with their progress and have addressed their challenges to move forward.”

Commending the ministries for implementing the State Government’s ‘MORE Agenda,’ Anyafulu specifically lauded the Ministry for Women Affairs and Social Development for its achievements over the past year. She urged the ministry to address its major challenges in the next budget.

During the visit to the Ministry of Housing, Anyafulu encouraged the ministry to pursue Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to tackle the housing deficit in the state. “The government alone cannot do it all,” she said.

The committee also praised the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Entrepreneurship for the successful launch of the ‘MORE Grant Scheme for petty traders and artisans’ in the state. She urged the ministry to establish a comprehensive social register for the poor and vulnerable to ensure effective implementation of government programs and policies.

Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Godknows Angele, highlighted state government programs addressing housing issues and outlined challenges facing the ministry. He solicited the Committee’s support in mitigating these challenges, particularly during the next budget preparation.

Commissioners for Women Affairs, Mrs. Pat Ajudua, and Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Orode Uduaghan, detailed their ministries’ activities and appealed for further support from the State Legislature.

Anyafulu was accompanied by committee members Mrs. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola (PDP – Ika North East), Mr. Augustine Uroye (PDP- Warri South I), and Mr. Bernard Odior, the Chief Whip of the Assembly.
