ASABA/Nigeria: The Acting Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has urged Nigerians to embrace patriotism to help the country achieve its rightful position on the global stage. Onyeme made this call on Friday while receiving members of the Egbema Leaders of Thoughts from Delta and Edo States during a courtesy visit in Asaba.
He emphasized the importance of putting national interest above personal gains, stating, “If all Nigerians imbibe the spirit of patriotism, not just thinking about ‘my own’ but about ‘my people,’ we will have a better state and a better Nigeria to live in and to leave behind for our children.”
Onyeme also praised the Egbema Leaders of Thoughts for their persistence and adherence to due process in their quest to have their Shallow and Deep Offshore Communities recognized as littoral communities under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). “I want to commend your patience and hard work in defending what belongs to your people in Abuja, driven by your patriotic spirit,” he said.
The Acting Governor assured the delegation that the Delta State government remains committed to safeguarding the interests of its citizens, and it will continue to act in their best interest.
In his address, the leader of the Egbema Leaders of Thoughts, Mr. Joel Bisina, highlighted that on March 18, 2024, the National Boundary Commission published the list of Littoral Communities in Nigeria’s Official Gazette, excluding Egbema Oil and Gas Communities from the list. He noted that these communities host several oil companies and requested their inclusion during the review of the gazette.
Bisina called on the Delta State government to support their appeal for recognition as littoral communities, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act.
