CPS to Delta Gov Dismisses Opposition’s Call for Election Cancellation

ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has dismissed the opposition’s call for the cancellation of last Saturday’s local government council elections as “preposterous and ridiculous.”

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, made this statement on Tuesday in Asaba, countering the allegations of rigging by opposition parties.

Speaking to journalists, Ahon described the opposition’s claims as baseless and laughable, asserting that they were not prepared for the elections. He emphasized that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has maintained its winning streak in the state due to its impactful programmes and projects since 1999.

He criticized the APC and Labour Party for not fielding candidates or conducting campaigns, highlighting the PDP’s extensive outreach across the entire state.

“The PDP was the only party that campaigned around all the units and wards,” he said. “You can’t stay in your home and expect people to come and vote for you.”

He thanked Deltans for their massive turnout and peaceful conduct during the elections, challenging the Labour Party to disclose their candidates and campaign efforts.

“You have to reach out to the people and tell them why they should vote for your party and candidates,” he asserted.

In dismissing the opposition’s accusations as distractions, he reaffirmed the government’s focus. He pointed out that the opposition’s claims were unfounded, given their poor performance in previous elections.

“Where were they when we were campaigning and reaching out to Deltans?” he asked.

He praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration for earning the trust of the people through significant achievements in roads, healthcare, education, and employment.

“Deltans have come to love the PDP and trust us, and we will not betray that trust,” he added.

Ahon also congratulated the newly sworn-in Council Chairmen and their deputies, urging them to champion human capital and infrastructural development at the grassroots level in line with Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda. He advised them to avoid internal conflicts to ensure meaningful development.

He concluded by thanking Deltans for their overwhelming support for PDP candidates, assuring that the synergy between the Governor and the chairmen would accelerate comprehensive development. He also praised the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) and security operatives for their professionalism, which contributed to the credibility of the election.
