Contractors Must Uphold Standards, Delta Government Insists
ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has assured that the state government remains consistent in paying contractors as part of its commitment to quality and timely project delivery under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration.
Aniagwu stated this yesterday while inspecting road projects in Sapele, including the Okirighwre-Benin Road, Okirighwre-Amukpe Road, Shell Road Extension, and Hausa Road Extension. He was joined by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon.
Acknowledging the efforts of contractors on-site and the cooperation of property owners along the right of way, Aniagwu emphasized the government’s no-debt policy. “The Governor has instructed that contractors must not be owed. As we mobilize them, payments are made promptly for completed work. This is a gesture we expect them to reciprocate by delivering projects that meet the highest standards,” he said.
He stressed that the government views contractors as partners in progress. “Our role as a government is to ensure prompt payments, and their role is to deliver according to the specifications outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement. This partnership is non-negotiable,” Aniagwu said.
During the inspection, the commissioner directed contractors to rectify substandard work immediately, particularly in areas where drainage systems needed adjustments. Despite these corrections, Aniagwu expressed satisfaction with the overall pace and quality of work.
“The Governor has been unequivocal: quality cannot be compromised. We are very particular about ensuring that engineering standards are upheld because these standards determine the funds deployed for these projects,” he remarked.
Aniagwu reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to delivering durable infrastructure that benefits all Deltans, stressing, “Our goal is to meet the highest engineering standards while ensuring that every project serves its intended purpose effectively.”
