Concerned Citizens Urge Delta State Governor’s Intervention Amidst Allegations of Intimidation and Financial Mismanagement in Ogume Community

OBODO-UGWA OGUME/Nigeria:  In a fervent plea for intervention, concerned citizens of Obodo-Ugwa Ogume community in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State have called on the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to urgently address the alleged intimidation and molestation of indigenes within their community.

The call to action transpired during a protest led by the community’s elders, women, and youths, aimed at putting an end to the incessant harassment perpetrated by uniformed armed men, reportedly under the command of Captain Abomah.

These armed individuals, as per the protesters, were allegedly acting under the instructions of the immediate past Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Mr. Aslem Oyibo, who is accused of causing unrest in the community.

Speaking to the press during the protest, Chief Oju King Nejichi, the community spokesperson, leveled serious accusations against Mr. Oyibo. Nejichi alleged financial mismanagement to the tune of seven hundred and fourteen million naira, as well as the unlawful imposition of Emeka Maduagu as his successor.

In an official document signed by the twenty-two families constituting Obodo-Ugwa Ogume community, an appeal was made to Governor Oborevwori to instruct Captain Agbomah to cease invading, intruding, and obstructing the peace and people of the community. The community leaders emphasized that Obodo-Ugwa Ogume is not a war zone and implored the governor to intervene urgently.

Further claims were made, asserting that Mr. Oyibo had purportedly threatened to use military personnel to close down the community, ominously stating that no one would be alive after the impending military invasion.

The community leaders earnestly requested that the Army and Police refrain from escorting and supporting Anslem Oyibo to prevent potential clashes, citing a history of enduring their excesses.

They specifically demanded the return of Mr. Christian Nwaocha’s seized motorcycle, taken by Captain Abomah and his team under Oyibo’s instruction during their invasion of the community.

Protesters, brandishing placards with various inscriptions such as “Anslem, return our community money” and “Military men, stop harassing Obodo-Ugwa,” decried Oyibo’s refusal to vacate office despite the expiration of his tenure on May 9, 2023. They accused him of terrorizing the community by allegedly using military personnel to intimidate and frame lies to implicate the community’s youths, thereby disrupting the peace of Obodo-Ugwa Ogume.

Affirming Chief Ifemeni Thomas as the Chairman of CDC in Obodo-Ugwa Ogume, as presented by the Head of Umu-Akalum Family, Chief Okwa Ojega Chidi, the community urged Mr. Oyibo to provide an account of his stewardship and facilitate a smooth handover to the newly constituted leadership.

Finally, the community leaders called on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and other anti-graft agencies to investigate the Oyibo-led administration, seeking to recover the seven hundred and fourteen million naira allegedly lost through inflation in executed projects and other embezzled funds during his tenure.
