OYO/Nigeria: A non-political group, Concerned Afijio Youths (CAY), has called on political party leaders in Oyo Federal Constituency to zone the House of Representatives ticket to Afijio in the next election, stressing the need for fairness and equitable representation.
In a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting in Jobele, the headquarters of Afijio Local Government Area, the group unanimously resolved that political parties must present a credible consensus candidate from Afijio to contest the 2027 election.
The statement, signed by CAY Chairman Mr. Aluko Abiodun, emphasized that Afijio and Atiba share common goals and aspirations, and that Atiba, having held the seat for three consecutive terms, should voluntarily support Afijio’s bid for the position.
The group argued that zoning the seat to Afijio would foster mutual respect, strengthen political cooperation, and promote development within the constituency. It urged youths from Afijio to champion the agitation peacefully and constructively, expressing optimism that the demand would be met amicably.
“Oyo Federal Constituency has been a formidable voice in the House of Representatives, but representatives have consistently emerged from Oyo town, excluding Afijio from this crucial political platform,” the communiqué read.
“As we approach 2027, it is imperative to reconsider the power dynamics within the constituency and give Afijio an opportunity to produce the next House of Representatives candidate. This would ensure a more balanced and inclusive representation.”
The group acknowledged that electoral success in Oyo Federal Constituency requires broad support from Oyo town, which holds the highest voter population across its four local government areas—Afijio, Atiba, Oyo East, and Oyo West. However, it noted that since 1999, only Oyo has produced representatives for the constituency.
Advocating for a zoning arrangement similar to that of Oyo Central Senatorial District, the youth group insisted that adopting the system at the federal constituency level would promote transparency and fairness in the political process.
“We are not demanding power as a right but making a passionate appeal to political party leaders, traditional rulers, religious bodies, traders’ associations, and other stakeholders to support an Afijio indigene for the House of Representatives in the 11th Assembly,” Abiodun stated.
