ASABA/Nigeria: The Asagba-in-Council, the apex traditional authority of Asaba, the Delta State capital, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fulfill the long-standing aspiration of the Anioma people by creating Anioma State.
In a letter co-signed by the Regent, Prof. Anthony Onuora Edozien MD (Ochendo Asagba), and the Secretary of Asaba Palace, Chief Patrick N. C. Ndili, the Council emphasized the importance and urgency of this demand.
The letter stated: “Our distinguished Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District in Delta State (our Anioma), is at the forefront of the campaign for the creation of Anioma State. He has already presented a bill in the Senate advocating for this cause.
“For decades, even before the creation of Delta State, the Anioma people have consistently and unanimously agitated for the establishment of Anioma State. We align with Senator Prince Ned Nwoko’s view that the creation of Anioma State will correct the current imbalance in the number of states in the South East and help mitigate insecurity in the region. We fully support President Tinubu’s resolve to restore peace and security in the South East.
“We respectfully urge President Tinubu to acknowledge our cultural, traditional, and linguistic ties with the South East. Our boundaries are well documented, and Anioma State will be highly viable due to its abundant human and natural resources.
“Given these considerations, we wholeheartedly support the creation of Anioma State and stand firmly behind Senator Prince Ned Nwoko in this prolonged quest. The people of Ahaba (Asaba) extend their warm greetings and commend your wisdom in piloting the affairs of state,” the statement concluded. The letter was also copied to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and all Delta North representatives in the National Assembly.
In a separate letter addressed to the forum of traditional rulers led by HRM Emmanuel Efeizomor, the Obi of Owa, the Asagba-in-Council called on Anioma monarchs to rally their communities in support of Senator Prince Ned Nwoko’s efforts.
The Ochendo Asagba stressed the urgency of seizing the current opportunity to actualize the creation of Anioma State, appealing to the forum of Anioma traditional rulers to formally communicate their support to the relevant federal authorities.
