The Chairman of the Ethiope Federal Constituency PDP Forum, Senator Dr. Ighoyota Amori, has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately conduct a by-election to fill the vacant seat in the constituency. The vacancy arose following the unlawful defection of Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Thursday during the inaugural meeting of the Ethiope Federal Constituency PDP Leaders Forum in Asaba, Delta State’s capital, Senator Amori cited Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s breach of constitutional provisions. He also referenced a Court Affidavit she signed, agreeing to vacate her seat at the House of Representatives if she defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“It is important for INEC to act swiftly and uphold the rule of law by conducting the by-election,” Amori stated. He criticized Hon. Ibori-Suenu for betraying the PDP, accusing her of “biting the fingers that fed her” and engaging in double dealings that culminated in her defection to the APC.
Amori assured party supporters that the PDP leadership in the constituency is resolute in ensuring that the seat is reclaimed. He emphasized that the legal agreement signed by Hon. Ibori-Suenu is binding and leaves no room for ambiguity.
The forum highlighted the events leading to Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s defection, which she justified with claims of non-existent divisions within the PDP. Forum leaders dismissed her reasons as baseless, asserting that her decision undermines the constituency’s political stability.
“Her defection violates the trust reposed in her by the party and the constituency,” Amori said. “PDP remains dominant in Delta State, and the leaders are united in reclaiming our mandate. Hon. Ibori-Suenu’s actions will not go unchecked.”
Amori also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects for the 2027 elections, crediting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his performance since assuming office. He affirmed that the PDP would sustain its dominance in Delta politics, stating, “Delta is PDP, and PDP is Delta. Our party’s supremacy has been unbroken since 1999, and this will continue through 2027 and beyond.”
The forum elected its executive members during the meeting, tasking them with strengthening the party’s presence in the constituency ahead of future elections.
